New Teacher Strategy #1: Prepare
teachers for their first year, and those who are new to a school district may need to go through an introductory process that makes teachers feel supported and helps them provide an excellent education. Whether or not a school offers an introductory program, new teachers can prepare for the school year in the following ways.
Understand the families and community that the school serves Teachers need to learn about the common challenges students face in their schools and prepare for them. For example, some children from underserved communities may need help with non-cognitive skills such as perseverance and self-control to succeed in school. Talking to administrators and conducting independent research can shed light on what works and what doesn't work with students and discover amazing resources.
Check the readiness in the classroom. New teachers should visit their classrooms before school starts and review a list. Are there enough tables and chairs for the expected number of students and a teacher's table? Does the overhead projector work? Are there chalk and/or are there new markings and erasers for the board? Teachers must ensure that their classrooms are fully functional; otherwise, they should alert school staff and ensure that problems are resolved. Learn about safety procedures.
Teachers should be aware of all safety and emergency measures at their school, from fire drills to shutdowns. Kate Vlchek, an experienced teacher in Aurora, Colorado, warns that new teachers may not receive hands-on training, just a teacher's handbook. Teachers should carefully review these procedures and ask questions to make sure they understand them.
New Teaching Strategy #2: Organizing
New Teachers will be amazed at the many demands they place on their time as they enter the world of daily teaching. Although first-time teachers may not fully understand what is happening in a successful classroom behind the scenes, it can help them organize into the following departments as they learn.
