SAN JOSE Adidas Evgeny Svechnikov Jersey , Calif. (AP) — The decision to add Erik Karlsson to an already formidable San Jose Sharks lineup during the offseason looked like a questionable move when the two-time Norris Trophy-winning defenseman got off to a humdrum start. With the 28-year-old starting to hit his stride, the deal now seems to be paying off.Karlsson had a goal and two assists, Joe Thornton surpassed a big milestone for the second time this month, and the Sharks beat the slumping Vancouver Canucks 4-0 on Friday night.Thornton had two assists, moving him past Mario Lemieux for 11th place on the NHL list. The 39-year-old center scored his 400th goal on Nov. 13.Karlsson has two goals and six assists in his last five games. He had just seven assists through his first 18 games.“It’s going to get better and better,” Karlsson said. “We’re going to start figuring things out out there and get to know each other a little bit more. It’s going to take some time. It’s a work in progress and it’s a long year. There’s been no panic in anyone, and especially not in me.”The Sharks took the early lead on Logan Couture’s eighth goal midway through the first period.Thornton passed Lemieux with his 1,034th assist late in the first period when Timo Meier redirected his shot with 10 seconds remaining near the end of a four-minute double-minor on Derrick Pouliot for high sticking.Thornton had another assist in the third period on Karlsson’s second goal of the season. His 1,035 assists include 750 with the Sharks.“He’s been playing at a high level for a while,” Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said of Karlsson. “He’s starting to . the puck’s starting to go in, he’s starting to get some luck. The guys he’s giving it to are starting to stick it in the net at the right time. Really, that’s all that changed. I thought he struggled the first five Adidas Jonathan Bernier Jersey , seven games, and I think since then he’s gotten pretty good.”San Jose sent the Canucks to their eighth straight loss. Vancouver has been outscored 34-16 over that stretch.“Obviously it’s tough,” Canucks defenseman Christopher Tenev said. “It’s eight in a row now and it’s something no one in here envisioned that would happen.”Vancouver had three power plays. The Sharks scored three goals on six power playsSan Jose has given up just two power-play goals in its last 19 games. The Sharks have killed off 48 of 50 penalties (96 percent) over that stretch.“You’ve got to give them credit,” Canucks coach Travis Green said. “They did a real good job killing penalties. They’re good at it. They’ve got a big strong team, a veteran team. They’re smart. I’ve said that before about penalty killing, it’s a learned art and they’re good at it.”The Sharks broke the game open midway through the third period on Melker Karlsson’s first goal of the season.Sharks goalie Aaron Dell had 19 saves.Canucks goalie Anders Nilsson turned back 20 shots. The Canucks managed just three shots in the third period.NOTES: The Sharks are 10-0-1 in their last 11 games against Vancouver with six straight wins at San Jose. . Sharks F Joe Pavelski had his five-game point streak snapped.UP NEXTCanucks: Conclude a three-game California road trip in Los Angeles on Saturday.Sharks: Open a five-game road trip in Vegas on Saturday CHICAGO — If the Chicago Blackhawks have any chance of rebounding from last year’s last-place finish in the Western Conference’s Central Division, getting contributions from their big-name veterans will play a big role. That’s where captain Jonathan Toews enters the picture.Heading into the Blackhawks’ home opener Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toews has produced goals in the first two games of the season for the first time in his career.Article continues below ...Toews had three goals in a 5-4 overtime victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night in which the Blackhawks watched a one-goal lead vanish in the third period when the Blues scored twice in a 22-second span to take the lead. But Chicago responded with a Toews game-tying goal in the third period before he delivered the winner at 2:20 of overtime.“Johnny’s been unbelievable the first two games as far as leading the way and leading the charge,” Chicago winger Patrick Kane told reporters after Saturday’s victory, according to the Blackhawks’ official website. “You couldn’t really ask much more from the captain.”While the Blackhawks will carry the momentum of back-to-back overtime victories into Sunday’s game at the United Center Adidas Paul Thompson Jersey , the fact that Toews has found a way to come up with a heavy dose of early season production with his four goals is a serious positive for the Blackhawks moving forward.“Johnny looked powerful,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville told reporters after Chicago’s season-opening victory over the Ottawa Senators, according to The Athletic. “He was quick in the puck area, got some explosiveness out of it. Got some free pucks. With his line having the puck, or him having the puck. A lot of things can happen.”As one of Chicago’s aging veterans, Toews understands what a fast start could mean for him — and the Blackhawks. But after an off season, both from a personal and team standpoint, Toews said that getting back to basics could go a long way as he attempts to bounce back.“We’re all trying to find our legs and get used to that pace and get our timing down, myself included,” Toews said, according to The Athletic. “As the game went on, I just felt a little bit more comfortable. I think as a team Adidas Troy Brouwer Jersey , we did a better job winning our battles and just being tough in the puck areas later in the game. Hopefully, I can build off of that.”The Blackhawks will face the Maple Leafs, who dropped a 5-3 decision to the Senators on Saturday.Toronto, which scored all three of its goals in the second period, couldn’t produce the equalizer after Ottawa scored 1:42 into the third period before the Senators picked up an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining.Frederik Andersen finished with 19 saves for the Maple Leafs. Backup goalie Garret Sparks will start in net for Toronto against Chicago on Sunday.Despite the Maple Leafs’ loss on Saturday, Andersen was encouraged by how his teammates played in front of him.“I thought we had a good game,” Andersen said, according to NHL.com. “I think we created some good opportunities to score and so did (Ottawa), but they scored a little bit more. They got the most of their opportunities.”Leafs forward Auston Matthews also saw improvement.“I think we played a much better game than we did opening night,” Matthews said, according to NHL.com. _________________ huangjian123 |
