College football is infamous for its humongous upsets. Every year Authentic Julio Jones Jersey , we all look forward to that one weekend when the whole world falls apart, hoping we’ll get a sequel to 2007 in our lifetimes. So let’s try something fun: keeping a rolling list of the 11 biggest FBS upsets of 2018, based strictly on Vegas point spreads at the time of kickoff. By the end of the year, I’m betting (Vegas term) some of these will look hilariously outdated, but we should also see at least one or two of the year’s most consequential games on this list. Consider this a fluctuating list of time capsules. Things have changed so much, Maryland beating Texas and Kentucky beating Florida are among those no longer making the cut! Even Purdue stunning Ohio State doesn’t make the list, if we’re strictly going by spreads.11. (tie) Cincinnati, 15-point underdog, won at UCLA in Week 1Photo by Harry How/Getty ImagesWelcome back, Chip! Cincy’s loading up on talent, and we knew this would be a drastic Year Zero for Kelly. So this wasn’t quite shocking. But still.11. (tie) Tennessee, 15-point underdog, won at Auburn in Week 7Photo by Michael Chang/Getty ImagesIn what might have been the craziest week of the year, with four top-eight teams losing, only one upset made the raw point spread list. Fun fact: Auburn opened as a TWENTY-point favorite! (LSU, Iowa State, Oregon, and Virginia were single-digit ‘dogs; USC was favored over Colorado; and Penn State was only favored over Michigan State by 13.5.)10. Temple, 16-point underdog, won at Maryland in Week 3Art Pittman-USA TODAY SportsIf this list went to 25 games, sooo many teams would appear on it as both upsetters and upsettees. It’s as if our sport has such a tiny sample size that we have to wildly overreact to each result.8. (tie) Eastern Michigan, 17-point underdog, won at Purdue in Week 2Sandra Dukes-USA TODAY SportsSecond straight year with a Big Ten win for EMU.8. (tie) East Carolina, 17-point underdog Matt Ryan Jersey , beat North Carolina in Week 2James Guillory-USA TODAY SportsDays after UNC head coach Larry Fedora said he didn’t remember getting blasted by ECU in 2014, the Pirates gave him another one to forget.6. Hawaii (tie), 17.5-point underdog, won at Colorado State in Week 0A CSU fan watching Hawaii win in Fort CollinsRon Chenoy-USA TODAY SportsThe season’s third FBS game will finish as one of the biggest upsets of the whole year. Hawaii had gone 3-9 the year prior, including a home loss to a decent CSU by 30 points.6. (tie) Wake Forest, 17.5-point underdog, won at No. 14 NC State in Week 11Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty ImagesThe ACC Atlantic had a weird number of teams jump into the top 20 of the rankings before this week. Wake provided an adjustment.5. Akron, 21-point underdog, won at Northwestern in Week 3Quinn Harris-USA TODAY SportsThat was the Akron Zips’ first Big Ten win since before “the Akron Zips” or “the Big Ten” existed.4. UNLV, 22.5-point underdog, won at San Diego State in Week 11Photo by Kent Horner/Getty ImagesUNLV, without NCAA Football prototype dynasty cornerstone Armani Rogers for a month now, went into San Diego and knocked off one of the Mountain West’s steadiest teams.3. BYU, 23.5-point underdog, won at No. 6 Wisconsin in Week 3Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty ImagesRemember when this felt like a massive game changer?2. Oregon State, 24.5-point underdog, won at Colorado in Week 9Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty ImagesAnd that undersells it! The Beavers came back from 28 down to win in overtime. That’s not even Colorado’s worst collapse this decade, at least?1. Old Dominion, 28-point underdog, beat No. 13 Virginia Tech in Week 4Photo by Michael Shroyer/Getty ImagesODU was 0-3, but pulled off the first Power 5 win in school history anyway. This wasn’t even their weirdest win of the year, though.Where the Atlanta Falcons stand heading into Week 5 against the Steelers Roster UpdateThe Falcons made one key roster move this week, adding defensive tackle Michael Bennett (no, not the Seahawks/Eagles Michael Bennett) to the roster. Bennett was promising coming out of college but his career has been repeatedly derailed by injuries http://www.authenticsatlantafalcons.com/cheap-matt-bosher-jersey , and he’s unlikely to get more than 10-15 snaps in his Falcons debut if he even suits up. The Falcons will lean heavily on Jack Crawford, Deadrin Senat and Terrell McClain against the Steelers with Grady Jarrett out. Otherwise, the roster’s where it was a week ago, for better or for worse. HealthThe Falcons added Grady Jarrett to the injury report this week, and the stud defensive tackle will miss this game. That means the Falcons are missing arguably their best player at every level of the defense, depending on how you feel about Jarrett vs. Takkarist McKinley and Keanu Neal vs. the team’s top cornerbacks. The defense is still in rough shape, in other words, while the offense is healthy outside of the loss of Andy Levitre earlier this year, and Wes Schweitzer has done a fine job of replacing him. There’s another shootout brewing in Pittsburgh. What’s at stake?Basically, a win here is potentially the difference between staying alive in the playoff hunt and transitioning to worrying about next year. The Falcons won’t be mathematically dead for a while, but their only road to relevance this year comes through winning games right now, starting with this weirdly shaky Pittsburgh team.If the Falcons lose they’ll be at 1-4 in a division where the Saints and Panthers both look like contenders, albeit flawed ones, and will have to make up an unreasonable amount of ground. It’s not impossible, but it will require the Falcons to be superb in a way they just haven’t been on both sides of the ball this season.A win, though? That’s 2-3, with a 1-1 record in the division and a matchup against a crumbling Buccaneers team on deck. That’s hope. That’s being alive. OutlookI’m dubious that the Falcons will win this, as much as it pains me to write that. I thought they could win both the Saints and Bengals game and think they can win this one, but it’s hard to bet on this team in a close shootout after two straight awful losses, and that’s what I think we’re in store for here. I’ll hope for another fireworks display on offense and genuine improvement on defense, but I’m not expecting it. Kudos to you if you are. _________________ huangjian123 |
